Trump Administration Recalls Career Diplomats
Since his return to office in January, Trump has initiated a sweeping overhaul of government, removing officials linked to his predecessor Joe Biden and appointing trusted allies to key roles. The administration has framed these actions as measures to reduce inefficiency and reinforce the ‘America First’ agenda.
Sources from the news agency revealed that ambassadors in at least 29 nations were notified last week that their assignments will conclude in January.
The largest impact is in Africa, where 13 countries — including Nigeria, Rwanda, and Somalia — will see their envoys recalled. Asia follows with eight nations, among them the Philippines and Vietnam. Four European states — Armenia, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Slovakia — are also affected, along with two countries each in the Middle East and the Western Hemisphere. According to a media outlet, those diplomats were not provided with specific reasons for their recall.
The move has sparked concern, as incoming presidents typically replace political appointees, while career diplomats are usually permitted to remain under the nonpartisan Foreign Service system. Reports indicate that those recalled are not being dismissed but reassigned to new roles in Washington.
